Church Bulletin Ideas: 25 Practical Ideas for Weekly Bulletins

· LanternLetter Co.

A weekly bulletin does a few jobs at once: it guides people through the service, welcomes visitors, and tells the congregation what is coming up. These ideas are grouped by those jobs so you can pick what fits your church.

What to include in a church bulletin

  • Church name, date and the name of the Sunday or season (for example, "Second Sunday of Advent")
  • Order of worship with hymn numbers, readings and responses
  • Scripture references for the day
  • Prayer list or prayer concerns (with permission)
  • Announcements and upcoming events, with dates, times and a contact
  • Giving information and how to give online
  • A short welcome for visitors and how to connect
  • Staff names and contact details, website and social accounts

Layout ideas that make bulletins easier to read

  1. Keep the order of worship on one page or spread so no one flips mid-service.
  2. Use one or two fonts only, with a larger size for anything read aloud together.
  3. Put congregational responses in bold so people know when to join in.
  4. Group announcements by date rather than by ministry.
  5. Leave white space; a crowded page is harder to follow.
  6. Use the same structure every week so people know where to look.
  7. Change the cover artwork with the liturgical season (see our Advent and Lent guides).
  8. Consider a large-print version for those who need it (see our large-print bulletin guide).

Content ideas beyond the basics

  1. A short reflection question tied to the sermon text
  2. A "this week at church" calendar strip
  3. A ministry spotlight that rotates weekly
  4. A welcome card or tear-off connection slip
  5. A kids' corner with a simple activity related to the reading
  6. Volunteer needs with a clear sign-up method
  7. A QR code to your website, giving page or sign-up form
  8. Birthdays or anniversaries (with consent)
  9. A note about accessibility: hearing loops, large print, nursery
  10. A hymn or song background note
  11. Next week's readings so people can prepare
  12. Seasonal reminders (Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Christmas Eve times; see our Christmas bulletin ideas)
  13. A thank-you to volunteers by team
  14. Mission or outreach updates
  15. A short prayer to take home
  16. Links to the monthly newsletter
  17. A matching image shared on social media so print and online feel connected

Making the weekly routine easier

Most of the work in a bulletin is gathering details and reformatting them. A consistent template, a weekly deadline for announcements and one person who collects everything go a long way. If you would rather hand it off, that is what our done-for-you plan is for.
